Research

Malaria remains one of the most devastating parasitic diseases in the world and the causative Plasmodium parasites are remarkable in their ability to invade and develop within dramatically diverse host cell types. My research program is focused on how these parasites interact with their host and evade host immune mechanisms. We are particularly interested in understanding how the parasite delivers effector proteins into its host cell and in identifying the key effectors required for host cell subversion. We use both human and rodent malaria parasites and the mosquito vector to address these questions in the blood- and liver-stages of infection within the vertebrate host.
