In Memory of James S. Balloun

March 2, 2023 – James S. Balloun, 84, passed away unexpectedly on February 25, 2023.

Born in Iowa and an Iowa State University alum, Balloun was an ardent supporter of the mission and vision of Iowa State University, especially interdisciplinary research initiatives that have the potential to make global impacts. In 2010, a gift from Balloun established the Vlasta Klima Balloun Professor of Engineering, and in 2015, his gift established the Vlasta Klima Balloun Faculty Chair, held by Dr. Balaji Narasimhan, who, in addition, is the Director of the Nanovaccine Institute.

Balloun took a great interest in the innovative work conducted at the Nanovaccine Institute and supported research endeavors within the Institute for many years. His generosity and strong support of multiple Iowa State programs and initiatives are having a tremendous impact. He provided the lead gift for the construction of the ATRB fifth-floor home of the Nanovaccine Institute. As a 1960 graduate of industrial and manufacturing systems engineering, Balloun had a deep interest in and appreciation for the potential of using biomaterials in nanovaccine development. He was also a strong champion of the potential of nanovaccines and advocated tirelessly for their advancement. This innovative work has the potential to create next-generation vaccines and, as a result, enhance health outcomes around the world.

“We are shocked and deeply saddened by the loss of Jim Balloun,” says Narasimhan. “His lifetime of hard work and commitment to public service sets an example for how to lead a life of service within the pursuit of research. His belief in our work and advocacy of nanovaccines will continue to inspire us to advance these life-saving products.”
