Research interest: He has (greater than 20 years) is in pharmaceutical research supporting preclinical and early clinical drug development. This experience is in preclinical and early clinical development of, subunit vaccines, antivirals, oncolytics, acetylcholinesterase (AChE) oxime antidote/reactivators, cyanide, chlorine, and other CBRN medical countermeasures. This work involved lead candidate selection, formulation, and development of clinical supplies, design and management of nonclinical safety, pharmacology, pivotal  nonclinical efficacy studies,  development of regulatory strategies, FDA meetings and filings. The Pharmaceuticals and Bioengineering Department at Southwest Research Institute, which he manages, has developed a number of medical countermeasures through multiple routes of delivery including injectable, oral, intranasal and intramuscular formulations, some of which progressed to clinical trials.His 60 member team at SwRI currently has government and commercially funded programs developing an antiviral, antibiotic, non-inflammatory steroids, AChE reactivators, nanoparticle- and other vaccines.
